A city in Florida doesn’t want people showing off their ‘whale tails,’ ‘plumber’s cracks’ or boxers on public property so much that they banned the saggy-pants fashion statement within city limits.
“Lookin’ like a fool, walkin’ downtown with ya pants on the ground,” ‘General’ Larry Platt famously sang in his ‘American Idol’ audition. “Giddy up! Get ya pants off the ground!”
Officials in Ocala, Fla. agree with Platt’s sentiment so much that city council unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits anyone on city property from wearing pants two inches or more below a person’s natural waist.
It doesn’t matter how Black men and boys dress, as white people always find a way to pathologize and criminalize them. And remember that Dr. MLK Jr.—a “respectable” Black Christian man— was assassinated while wearing a suit. Fuck “respectability”-politics.
Lets just ignore the fact that school shootings have sky rocketed. The biggest problem facing America is black men sagging. In Florida no less. Are y’all motherfuckers serious?! You cannot be.
Weed is becoming legal. They need new ways to throw those scary black men and scary 8 year old black boys in prison.
White people wear these
Black people who choose to spend their money on Jordans aren’t the problem with Black communities. People who uphold respectability politics and have deep seated internalized hatred are the problem. This shit is classist as hell and ignores the fact that you can’t compare an $150 shoe to a half million dollar house.
That comment I had to bold it
Let talk about institutionalized racism designed to systemically target Black people. But if that’s if we bypass other forms of institutionalized racism like private prisons and a system designed to incarcerate Black people at significantly higher rates than their white counterparts especially for the use of drugs. Despite the fact that whites are proven to use drugs more and are arrested and jailed for it a lot less. But there are a number of other examples in housing, health, education, finance, politics, etc that show without question that racism is very much a part of all these institutions and sadly Black folks still have to navigate these institutions to survive in this country. Racism is such a big part of everyday life that middle class Black people start to blame poor Black people for their situation despite the fact that we are all subjected to the same racist institutions. Stop this respectability bullshit. You want to be mad and blame someone blame the source not the victim!
